Installation Steps

  1. Download the Java 1.2.2 or later plug-in. (Finish reading this "step 1" before you...) Click here to go to Sun Microsystem's page. It should look something like this:

Scroll down this page until you find the "Download" section, which should look like this:

Click on the "Continue" button. This will take you to Sun Microsystem's "License Agreement".

After you have read the agreement, click on the "Accept" button to continue. This will take you to the following download page.

Click on the "FTP Download" (or the "HTTP Download") button. A screen will be displayed in which you can specify which folder to download the file into. Any folder is O.K., but be sure to write down where the file is being downloaded to. Do not change the "File name" field. The folder is specified in the "Save in:" input field.

The "Saving Location" message box should now be displayed showing you the progress of down loading the file. If you haven't already done so, you should write down the location of where it is saving the file to. This is shown as the "Saving" field. In this example this would be "G:\Download\jre1_2_2-win.exe".

The progress of the download is displayed as follows.

After the download is completed you will have to run the "jre1_2_2-win.exe" file you just downloaded. You can "back" out of the Sun Microsystems web pages.

  2. Now that you have downloaded the plug-in, you need to install it. You do this by running the "jre1_2_2-win.exe" file you just downloaded. Display the folder and double click on the "jre1_2_2-win.exe" icon.

This will install the Java runtime environment and the Java plug-in.

  3. Once the plug-in is installed, you need to change the Plug-in Properties. Go to your Start->Programs->Java Plug-in Control Panel.

This brings up the following screen.

    Click on the "Advanced" tab.

Click on the "Use Java Plug-in Default" pulldown tab. This will show a list of Java runtime environments. Select the "JRE 1.2 in C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2" option.

    Click on the "Apply" button.

You can now exit from the Java Plug-in Properties window by clicking on the "X".

  4. To finish the installation, you need to download and install the Java 3D libraries.

You should now be able to run the all the Java 3D applets.
